Program Note
Il Mare is a time-crossing romantic story happening in the same physical space. The original title, Shee Wol Eh, means love beyond time. Director Lee Hyun-Seung remarks that making his third feature (his first in five years) was ′as if he was working on his debut work.′ This film is indeed thoroughly based on the director′s sensibility, as the film′s initial attraction is foremost feeling over logic. Il Mare begins in winter of 1999, with Eun-Joo leaving the house named ′Il Mare. She leaves a note for the next tenant, asking to keep a letter from her old-lover, if it ever happens to arrive. The recipient of such a note is Sung-Hyun, who happens to do so at the winter of 1997. Crossing two years of time spans, the two begin exchanging letters and fall in love. Such time differentials, however, bring ordeals to these time-crossing lovers. Lee previously attempted to deliver subliminal messages through colors in Blue in You and once again pays subtle interest in arranging a sense of color in Il Mare by having red and green as the film′s principle tones. Lee claims, "Although green is a stable color, it contains elements of uncertainty upon its extended viewing." It is also interesting to note the film′s unique visual images, as they are the results of juxtaposing color and black & white processed prints together from original negatives. (Han Sang-Jun)
