Program Note
A piano in the middle of a quiet forest shines in the moonlight. As a boy touches the keys, a beautiful melody echoes through the woods like magic. A genius, Kai, is blessed with a God-given talent. Syuwue, however, can be an elite student of music but is not a genius. The Piano Forest, based on the comics of the same title that sold 3.5 million copies in Japan alone, is a theatrical animation that describes the friendship, growth, and healing process of the two boys of different fates through an instrument, the piano. The original comics are still developing where Kai comes out to the world and how he puts his talent in use, but the film illustrates up to the middle of the story where Kai finally encounters the world outside the forest. The original comics writer Makoto Isshiki and the director Masayuki Kojima had collaborated before with The perfect world of KAI and this film also remains true to the original in character expressions, mood and general flow of the story. However, in the film, we can actually listen to Kai’s performance, which could only be imagined in the comics. The splendid piano performance of Kai is the work of Russian prodigy Vladimir Davidovich Ashkenazy. The healing energy of Kai’s piano performance that fills the forest and characters around him, reaches us with familiar melodies and warmth.
