Program Note
[The Heavenly Kings] is a mockumentary where reality and fiction mix. This is also Hong Kong matinee idol Daniel WU`s feature directorial debut. WU starts a boy band ′Alive′ with close friends Conroy Chan, Andrew Lin, and Terence Yin. Charting "Alive"s rise to success, [The Heavenly Kings] documents the various marketing strategies, tricks, and even the ways the band deceives and uses the journalists that comprise Hong Kong′s entertainment industry. This mockumentary, which could be a confession by Wu, has the power to expose the dark side of the entertainment industry. Not only is it a sharp, sarcastic comedy, it`s also a social criticism which shows how images are manipulated in the media. WU reveals a sincerity in this film by satirizing even his own popular image.(Kim Ji-seok)
