Program Note
The seventh feature of Director Chang Tso-chi, post-Taiwan New Wave leader, this film is about a city boy who spends his summer vacation at a rural community not far from Taipei. Xiaobao, a sixth grader in elementary school is sent to his grandpa in Quchi during the summer, while his parents are arranging their divorce. To Xiaobao, everything in Quchi seems to be strange and amazing. There’s even, at the village school, a pretty girl with the same nickname as him: “Bear”. Xiaobao, whose pastime used to be tablet games and cellular phone, begins to play around the beautiful lake and valley with his new pals, adjusting himself to the country life. The scenic nature and the simple lives of the villagers are realistically depicted through the boy from Taipei. The lively nature of the villagers and rural landscapes are beautifully and vividly captured with superb visuals. (KANG Naeyoung)
