Program Note
A 17-year-old boy, Dong-kyu, finds a poster offering a reward for reporting stores that use disposable supplies. To get the reward, he takes pictures of a fast-food restaurant and runs away, only to be knocked out by a stone which the clerk casts. Dong-kyu lies that he has amnesia to stay with Shi-nae. Since then, Young-hee, a Korean-Chinese laborer from China comes to live at Shi-nae′s. Five Is Too Many is one of the best independent feature films this year. Unlike other recent independent features, this film does not struggle for form and style. Not that it is interested in criticizing reality as a realist. Five Is Too Many is a simple and sensitive character sketch. Five protagonists appear, and all of them show good acting and together are a wonderful ensemble in general. Most of all, what is very touching is the warm and optimistic, non-exaggerated attitude towards contemporary outsiders.
