New Currents Award Jury

YU Hyun-Mok

Chairperson

Born in 1925, he enrolled at Dongkuk University in 1946 where he studied Korean Literature and founded a ciné club. His professional career began during the Korean War. He made his debut as director with the film Crossroad (1955). In 1960, he directed The Aimless Bullet, which proved him to be a master of montage. He has been a lecturer at Dongkuk University since 1976. In 1982, he became a member of The National Academy of Arts, Republic of Korea. His films include A Martyr (1965), Flame (1975), and The Son of Man (1980).

Garin NUGROHO

Born in Yogjakarta, Indonesia, in 1961, he studied film at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts, and has made 13 documentary films. His first feature film, Love on a Slice of Bread (1991) won him award for best young director at the Asia Pacific Film Festival in Seoul, Korea. His third film And Moon Dances was invited by the 1st PIFF, and won the FIPRESCI and NETPAC Awards at the Berlin International Film Festival. Currently, he is working on Indonesian documentary projects for television, commercial and music video production, and his next feature film.

HAH Myung-Joong

Born in 1947, He started his film career as an actor in the 1970s and received numerous awards including award for best supporting actor at the Asia Film Festival for It’s Time to Start in 1977. In 1983, he made his directorial debut with X and made many films including Life Line and The Blazing Sun. He established the Hah Myung-Joong Film Studio in 1985 for the production of Korean films and importing of foreign films.

J. HOBERMAN

J. Hoberman is the senior film critic for “The Village Voice” and adjunct professor of cinema at Cooper Union in New York City. He is the author of a book on the history of Yiddish cinema and a study of cult movies. He has programmed film series at the Museum of Modern Art, Pacific Film Archives and the Jewish Museum. His reviews are collected in “Vulgar Modernism: Writing on Movies and Other Media.”

Klaus LACKSCHEWITZ

Born in Riga, Latvia in 1938. He studied Philosophy, Literature and Art History at the University of Hamburg. After graduating, he worked at NDR-Hamburg Radio, and in 1969 started work as programming executive in charge of feature films at ARD/First German Television Network in Frankfurt. His current position is as network head of film programming, Managing Director of ARD/DEGETO FILM GMBH, the buying arm of the ARD Network, in charge of international film and series acquisitions.

ZHANG Ming

Born in Eastern Sichuan Province, China in 1961. Pursued graduate studies in directing at the Beijing Film Academy. From 1991 to 1994, Zhang Ming worked on a number of short TV series while teaching classes in Audio-Visual Language at the Film Academy. In 1995, he directed his first film In Expectation. This film won the “New Currents” Award at the first PIFF.

Woonpa Award Jury

JUNG Sung-Il

Born in 1929. He is the most renowned cinematographer in Korea. After graduating from the Dept. of Mechanics at Seoul National University, he entered the cinema world. His films include The Woman of Fire, Mandara, and Sopyonje. He has received many cinematography awards from various film festival including the 1987 Hawaii International Film Festival.

MOON Sung-Keun

Born in 1953. Graduated from Sogang University. One of the most prestigious film actors in Korea. His professional career began as a stage actor. His film credits include Chilsu and Mansu (1988), Black Republic (1993) and Green Fish (1997).

LEE Choong-Jik

Born in 1958. Graduated from the French film school ESRA. He is now a professor at Chung-Ang University and also a member of the executive committee at the Seoul Human Rights Film Festival and Korean Film Institute committee member.

CHO Yong-Won

Actress. In 1994, she received a master’s degree from Waseda University. After her debut in The Last Heung-Nam I Have Seen in 1982, she appeared in many other works. Now master of ceremonies at EBS-TV program “Cinema Paradise.”

KIM Yun-Tae

Born in 1962. After graduating from Seoul College of Art, he has directed and produced many independent/short films. His film Dowsing (1996) was invited to the 1st PIFF.
