  • The Asian Filmmaker of the Year

In order to celebrate the accomplishment of a filmmaker who has the most activity in improving and developing the Asian Film industry in the past year, we're honored to present "The Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award". The recipient of this year's prestigious award is Mr. Hou Hsiao-hsien.

    HOU Hsiao-hsien

Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien, born in 1947, is to be the second recipient of The Asian Filmmaker of the Year Award, created by the Pusan International Film Festival to recognize the significant contribution of Asian filmmakers. His latest film, Cafe Lumière which is a tribute to Japanese film master Yasujiro Ozu (1903-1963) to mark his centenary, stresses the quiet nuances of human emotions and challenges the Asian cinema in whole. Following the life of ordinary Japanese with a minimalist approach, Hou Hsiao-hsien finds himself drawn to certain sentimental connections driven by the genuine issue of identity-the subject Ozu favored in his body of work as well. This opens up a new chapter in the history of Asian cinema while delivering insightful conversation between the master and director himself-without borders and a sense of time.
