Program note

In 2014 in Thailand, a military coup occurred and the military regime took over. Four distinctive 21st century Thai perspectives explore how militarism penetrates and relates to everyday life. The seemingly peaceful social order exists within a system that controls and monitors for any disturbing movement that breaks from the prescribed rhythm and behavior. If someone is not well-assimilated, he or she is doomed to be expelled from society. In a world where the military regime interferes with photo exhibitions, even human faces can be denied their expression. The most important moments in the four films of this omnibus, however, are the scenes revealing the moments when militarism has lost its effect. The faces of ordinary people cannot be controlled by censorship and are full of expressions that demand interpretation. Even when they can′t move, people glance and send messages to others to run away. The scenes of everyday militarism stand out in the park under construction, but a multitude of people with eyes that remember the past and practice the present will live on in the future of Thailand.
