PROGRAM NOTE
This third feature by director and Bhutan priest Khyentse Norbu is based on Sunil Gangopadhyay’s short story Rakta Aar Kanna. Norbu wrote the screenplay and brought together an international crew to finish the project. The film revolves around the traditional Bharatanatyam dance, using beautiful imagery to tell the story of two lovers, their self-sacrifice and a woman’s will to survive adversity. In a small Indian village, Lila is learning to dance from her mother, Devadasi, a Bharatanatyam dancer who has devoted herself to a Hindu god. Lila falls in love with low class Shyam, who dreams of becoming a sculptor. Shyam asks Lila to model for him as he sculpts a goddess, and the two become very close. Lila begins to imagine that Shyam is the god Krishna, to whom she must devote her life. However, the village chief, Subha, discovers their relationship and Lila decides to sacrifice her happiness for her mother and Shyam. The Bharatanatyam dance is no mere dance in Vara: A Blessing. The goddess that Shyam wanted to create was doing Bharatanatyam movements, and Lila imagines meeting the god Krishna as she dances the Bharatanatyam. Transcending social class, it is equal for all, and is a special dance that encompasses both beauty and saintliness. Lila’s decision to sacrifice herself for someone else’s happiness is likened to that of a seeker of truth, and her dance becomes a vessel for truth. Never before has dance been so creatively interpreted. (KIM Ji-Seok)
