Program Note
In November 2011, the Democratic Republic of the Congo held its second presidential election in approximately 50 years since the first presidential election held in the 1960s. This film is a documentary that follows the process from the pre-election period, the actual election day and the postelection aftermath. In the center of this film’s plot stands a man who worked for a church minister and is now set to work in the campaign for a candidate. The film shows how he tries hard to persuade and win over voters with all kinds of sweet talk. This might make Korean audiences smile as they recall the landscape of Korea’s past election campaigns. The film also sheds light on the prevailing corruption of the political world, the public’s distrust and skepticism for President Kabila, and the poverty-ridden life of the Congolese people. The final election result overlaps with the images of children innocently playing in desolate fields, posing a question about Africa’s political reality. (RHEE Soue-won)
