[Press Release] Busan International Film Festival (36)_(2018.10.02)
Establishment of the (Tentatively Named) Jiseok Film Lab and Documentary ‘Jiseok’ Press Conference Announcement
The Busan International Film Festival establishes (tentatively named) ‘Jiseok Film Lab (working title)’, which is named after the associate film festival director, the late Kim Jiseok who died at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017. It is a very special undertaking that will fulfill Kim’s mission of facilitating the growth of the Busan International Film Festival and the development of Asian cinema. South Korean and Asian filmmakers from the world will start their business together and with new resolve.
Jiseok Film Lab will be managed by film producer Cha Seung-jae (CEO) and Busan International Kids & Youth Film Festival director Kim Sang-hwa. This new undertaking seeks to find a correct direction to encourage the Busan International Film Festival’s growth and vision, in providing systematic research on Asian cinema and business.
The lab will produce a documentary film ‘Jiseok’ (directed by Kim Young-jo, produced by Bae So-hyun) which will capture the life and memories of associate festival director Kim Jiseok who showed his passion and commitment towards Asian cinema. Documentary ‘Jiseok’ provides an opportunity to see a long lasting mutual exchange between Asian cinema and the Busan International Film Festival that will create new opportunities for the future of Asian cinema. The budget will be made possible by a sponsorship grant by CJ E&M and Lotte Cultureworks’ sponsorship as well as public participation and crowd funding.
The foundation ceremony for the Jiseok Film Lab and the documentary ‘Jiseok’ press conference will be a special moment. They will be held on Saturday, October 6th, during the festival period of the 23rd Busan International Film Festival. The late director is also remembered for his management of ‘Platform Busan’ (a community network event for Asian independent filmmakers). Many prominent filmmakers and industry insiders (CEO Cha Seung-jae, film festival director Kim Sang-hwa, and Busan International Film Festival chairman Lee Yong-kwan) will also join the event in a show of respect.
