Special Program in Focus at the 23rd Busan International Film Festival, ‘Centennial Anniversary of the Philippine Cinema’
Screening 10 feature films on ‘Cinema as a response to the nation’
The 23rd Busan International Film Festival, held from October 4 to 13, will screen 10 Philippine classic films at the Special Program, ‘Centennial Anniversary of the Philippine Cinema – Cinema as a response to the nation.’
In celebration of the upcoming 100th anniversary of the Philippine Cinema in 2019, the Philippine Special Program in Focus has collaborated since 2017 with a special committee formed by different Philippine government institutions and organizations. The committee has prepared various programs and events for the Busan International Film Festival. In particular, 10 films have been selected by a sub-committee of academia and critics in correspondence to ‘Cinema as a response to the nation.’
The films screened at the Special Program in Focus consist of classic films in the decades of turbulence and turmoil in which the revolution against Spain and the war with America for democracy took place. The Philippines has recorded history of ongoing struggle against colonial rule by great powers and government dictatorships. The historical struggle for justice that ensues from challenging authoritative regimes is reflected in the Philippine society and its films.
Significant masterpieces of major Philippine directors who reign supreme in Philippine film history will be made public, such as Eddie Romero, Ishmael Bernal, Chito S. Roño, and Lino Brocka. In addition, the Philippine program will publish a special exhibition with images and references outlining its golden era that will include a special edition book written by major Philippine scholars and critics.
