[Press Release] Special Program in Focus at the 19th Busan International Film Festival - New Turkish Cinema: Faces of ..

Special Program in Focus at the 19th Busan International Film Festival  New Turkish Cinema: Faces of the 21st Century   The 19th Busan International Film Festival presents ‘New Turkish Cinema: Faces of the 21th Century’ for the Special Program in Focus this year. This year’s Special Program in Focus will be of significance. 2014 has been a watershed year of the Turkish film industry; Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan added special significance to the century year of the Turkish film industry by winning the Palme d’Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival with Winter Sleep (2014). The non-Asian country Special Program in Focus this year is focused on Turkey, often called the ‘brother country’ of Korea. Turkish film was unrecognized until Yılmaz Güney won the Palme d'Or award at the Cannes Film Festival with Yol (1982). 30 years since the award, Nuri Bilge Ceylan won the Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival with Winter Sleep this year, reminding the world of the potential of Turkish cinema.   The representation of sentient living beings and idolatry are forbidden under the Islam; consequently, it took long time for film to settle as art since it is based on visual images. Entering the era of Turkish Republic in 1924, the awareness of the need for film as art has been sprouted with difficulty throughout the history. Turkish film industry was at its height in the 1960s – 1970s with the annual production of approximately 300 films. The need for films with consciousness increased since Yol has won the award; however, the film industry was nearly dismantled again in the 1980s – early 1990s.  It was the mid to late 1990s when group of writers began to emerge with the start of the New Wave movement. The directors in this era are: Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Zeki Demirkubuz, Yeşim Ustaoğlu, Reha Erdem, and Reis Celik, the representative figures of the Turkish film industry. They drew global filim industy’s interest into their serious world of art. Night of Silence (2012) by Reis Celik was screened at the 17th Busan International Film Festival, and Yeşim Ustaoğlu was appointed to the New Currents jury at the 14th Busan International Film Festival, showing the Busan International Film Festival’s continued attention to the Turkish cinema.   Also, directors with distinct personality such as Uğur Yücel, Kutluğ Ataman, Tayfun Pirselimoglu, Orkun Ünlü, and Fatih Akin, have contributed to further expand the spectrum of the Turkish film along with the comprehensive talent, producer and programmer, Ahmet Boyacioglu.  Special Program in Focus will screen a total of 7 films, including 21st century films by directors from the 1990s – 2000s, and a feature film by Ali Aydin who is making a name for himself. A seminar with actor, directors and critics is being planned this special program, which is expected to quench the thirst of the audiences for the Turkish film. In line with the Special Program in Focus, World Cinema will screen the gem of the Turkish cinema, including Winter Sleep (2014) and The Lamb (2012), which has been introduced at the Cannes Film Festival, the Berlin International Film Festival, and the Venice International Film Festival.     New Turkish Cinema: Faces of the 21st Century (For detailed Information on film, please see the attachment)   Title Director Black and White (2010) Ahmet Boyacioglu The Extreme Tragic Story of Celal Tan and His Family(2011) Onur Unlu Inside (2012) Zeki Demirkubuz Mold (2012) Ali Aydin Cold (2013) Ugur Yucel Singing Women (2013) Reha Erdem I am not Him (2013) Tayfun Pirselimoglu                                                                      * In chronological order of film release    19th Busan International Film Festival will be held Oct 2, 2014 to Oct 11, 2014. Asian Film Market will be held Oct 5, 2014 to Oct 8, 2014.  Asian Project Market will be held Oct 6, 2014 to Oct 8, 2014

[Press Release] Special Program in Focus: The Power of Georgian Women Filmmakers

[Press Release] Busan International Film Festival (2014.08.27)The 19th Busan International Film Festival Special Program in Focus: The Power of Georgian Women FilmmakersThe 19th Busan International Film Festival Special Program in Focus introduces The Power of Georgian Women Filmmakers from October 2nd to 11th. This special program will present a total of 12 various works from female directors of a new generation that leads the ‘Georgian New Wave’ following the pioneer work of Georgia’s first female director Nutsa Gogoberidze. This year, the Busan International Film Festival established a special program devoted to Georgia in order to introduce newly emerged female directors and spotlight their significance in Georgian cinema history which is severed much like the nation’s rough history. Georgia is a country with tumultuous history due to its bordering Russia, Turkey, and Armenia. Having been occupied by Czarist Russia and merged as a member of Soviet Union, Georgia finally became independent from Russia in 1991; however it is still struggling with financial crisis and civil war in the turbulent transition. Georgian films are receiving attention due to their unique flow and achievements different from recent Russian or European ones. Many of the films leading the ‘Georgian New Wave’ are directed by new generation women filmmakers. This year’s special program will showcase 12 films including A Story of Mountainous Racha directed in 1930 by the first female director in Georgia, Nutsa Gogoberidze. In addition to being the first Georgian female director, Nutsa Gogoberidze also initiated the female line of 3 generations of filmmakers. Her daughter Lana Gogoberidze directed Day is Longer than Night introduced at the Cannes International Film Festival; her granddaughter Salome Alexi is currently working as a producer and director. The opportunity to watch works from all the three women in the family line will be presented in Busan this year and other films from different Georgian female directors will also show the advancement of Georgian cinema. The Power of Georgian Women Filmmakers is not only significant for showing films directed by women but this is an opportunity to show social issues, contradiction, discrimination and conflict seen in Georgia through 12 films by female directors. Regardless of gender, the new cinematic aesthetics of Georgian films will be delivered to audiences. The 19th Busan International Film Festival which presents The Power of Georgian Women Filmmakers will be held for 10 days from October 2 to 11.  [The Films of The Power of Georgian Women Filmmakers] TitleDirectorA Story of Mountainous RachaNutsa GOGOBERIDZEBakhmaroSalomé JASHIBridesTinatin KAJRISHVILIBrotherTeona MGHVDELADZEThierry GRENADEDay is Longer than NightLana GOGOBERIDZEFelicitaSalome ALEXIIn BloomNana EKVTIMISHVILISimon GROSSKeep SmilingRusudan CHKONIASalt WhiteKeti MACHAVARIANISusaRusudan PIRVELIThe Machine Which Makes Everything DisappearTinatin GURCHIANIThe LullabyNana JANELIDZE
