    The 21st BIFF Closing Ceremony Hosts Announced The Closing Ceremony hosts of the 21st Busan International Film Festival will be actor Kim Min Jong and actress Choi Yeojin. Both Kim and Choi will adorn the finale of the festival at the Busan Cinema Center on October 15th.  Kim Min Jong is a prominent actor and singer in Korea who has been actively performing in TV dramas, films, and live theater. His recent works include: Gone Tomorrow (2016), Mrs. Cop (2016), Secret Door (2014), The Three Musketeers (2014), Bonnie and Clyde (2013), and A Gentleman’s Dignity (2012). In 2016, he narrated the film, Bringing Tibet Home (2016). Model and actress Choi Yeojin has been gaining public affection through her performances in films, TV dramas, TV shows, and music videos. The versatile actress appeared in Yongsoon (2016), E Channel TV drama, Riders: Catch Tomorrow (2015), the KBS TV drama, On the Way to The Airport (2016), and My Sister, The Pig Lady (2013).     A Talent Incubator for Young Asian Filmmakers: The Asian Film Academy Gets Into Gear!Celebrating its 12th year, the Asian Film Academy (AFA), the cradle of development for Asian filmmakers, embarked on its 18 day academic program on September 29th (Thu), starting with a Welcome Reception at the Busan Tourism Organization ARPINA.   Among the numerous attendees to the Welcome Reception on September 29th were: The president of Dongseo University - Chang Jekuk, Festival Director of the Busan International Film Festival - Kang Soo-youn, Director of the Busan Film Commission - Choi Yoon, and Head Professor of Im Kwon Taek College of Film& Media Arts - Son Hyun-seok (an AFA member). In addition, the mentors Vimukthi Jayasundara and Bogumil Godfrejow participated.The place was vibrant with the inclusion of 24 promising fellows from various countries, interns from Dongseo University, and AFA alumni who will assist the program that participated in the Welcome Reception. The fellows will participate in extensive academic programs such as a workshop and mentoring session under the guidance of a representative Film Master of Asia. The fellows also will make 2 short films with the AFA instructors during the program that will be completed and screened on October 14th at the Busan Cinema Center Cinema 2.  Tsai Ming Liang, the master who leads a new wave in Taiwanese film, has been named dean of AFA 2016. Tsai Ming Liang is a representative director in Asia, winning the Golden Lion Award at the Venice International Film Festival in 1994 with Vive L'Amour (1994) and the Silver Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2005 with The Wayward Cloud (2005). Vimukthi Jayasundara and Bogumil Godfrejow will support their students as the Directing Mentor and Cinematography Mentor. Vimukthi Jayasundara has directed The Forsaken Land (2005), which won The Caméra d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and Between Two Worlds (2009), which was invited to the Venice Film Festival. Bogumil Godfrejow was nominated for the European Film Award for Best Cinematographer in 2003 for Distant Light (2003) As in other years, the AFA 2016 has raised a fund to support young filmmakers in Asia. The ‘New York Film Academy Scholarship’’ entitles 2 students to participate in the New York Film Academy Workshop, ‘Dongseo University Fund’, and ‘Lumos Award’.  The Asian Film Academy 2016 fosters young Asian talent and establishes a network for Asian filmmakers. Widely acknowledged cineastes, hidden stars in Asia, and big-name stars of Western Cinema are eagerly waiting to travel to Busan.  Directors and stars, never forget to visit BIFF after they shoot a new film and have confirmed their affection by visiting Busan this year as well. The current acting sensation of Japan, Odagiri Joe, will visit after a 3-year hiatus with his latest film, Over the Fence by Yamashita Nobuhiro. Watanabe Ken, the Opening Ceremony Host of the 19th BIFF, will greet audiences with his performance as the main character in Rage. Kunimura Jun, created a sizeable fan base in Korea with his film The Wailing , will meet his fans again in Busan with The Wailing. Alicia Vikander also met audiences with her debut film Pure in 2010 BIFF before she became popular as the heroine of Jason Bourne and as the award winner of 2016 the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Déborah François, the Belgium actress, introduced by Dardenne’s film The Child in Korea is preparing her first visit with The Poisoning Angel that she starred in. Lastly, Hong Kong’s legendary actress Kara Wai is also preparing her journey to Busan.     The 21st Busan International Film Festival Opening/Closing Ceremony Photo Zone Pass Guide   The 21st Busan International Film Festival is now receiving Opening/Closing Ceremony Photo Zone Pass applications for members of the press who would like to cover the Opening and Closing Ceremony Red Carpet of the 21st Busan International Film Festival. There is NO on-site application for the Opening/Closing Ceremony Photo Zone Pass, so please refer to the guide below and apply for the Photo Zone Pass before the deadline. ◈ Opening/Closing Ceremony Photo Zone Pass The pass allows entrance to the photo wall zone built at the BIFF Theater (Outdoors Theater) of the Busan Cinema Center. It is only applicable for the day of Opening/Closing Ceremony. You may apply for both a Press Badge and the Opening/Closing Ceremony Photo Zone Pass.  ▶ Eligibility: Photographers and video reporters from identified media company ▶ How to Register for the Opening/Closing Ceremony Photo Zone Pass: 1. He also won the Award for Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival 2015 with The Assassin (2015).  KORE-EDA HirokazuBorn in Tokyo, acclaimed producer, writer, and director Kore-eda Hirokazu graduated from Waseda University. He first intended on a career as an author before going into documentary television making and later filmmaking. His filmography as director includes Wonderful Life (1998), Nobody Knows (2004), Still Walking (2008), I Wish (2011) and Like Father, Like Son (2013), which won the Pix du Jury at the Cannes International Film Festival 2013, Our Little Sister (2015), and After the Storm (2016). LEE Chang-dongDirector Lee Chang-dong debuted with his film, Green Fish (1997). His second film, Peppermint Candy (2000) was invited to the Cannes’s Directors’ Fortnight, and his third feature film, Oasis (2002) received the Special Director’s Award at Venice International Film Festival. His fourth film, Secret Sunshine (2007) also won various major awards from prestigious international film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival. He won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his recent film, Poetry (2010).     Vision-Director Award Jurors selected! Critique JUNG Sung-il, HUH Moonyung, and KIM Haery  Three prominent Korean film critics are jury members for the Vision-Director Award given to the top 2 promising directors in the Korean Cinema Today-Vision section. This year’s Vision section introduces newly produced independent films. A total of 11 films have been selected this year. These films will be nominated for the Vision-Director Award, Daemyung Culture Wave Award, Citizen Critics’ Award, CGV Arthouse Award, and NETPAC Award. The Vision-Director Award is given to 2 directors who have shown the most outstanding production skills, a prize of 5,000 USD will be given as a part of the award. The prize money is sponsored by MEGABOX, Inc. and the awarding ceremony will take place in the Busan Vision Award event on October 14, the day before the Closing Ceremony.  Juror Bio JUNG Sung-il / Film Critic, Director Jung Sung-il is a film critic and director. Marking his directorial debut with Café Noir (2009), Jung Sung-il was invited to the New Currents Section at the Busan International Film Festival 2015 with his second film Night and Fog in Zona (2015). HUH Moonyung / Film Critic Huh Moonyung is well known for his critiques that maintain a deep contemplation and elegant style. Serving as the reporter for Monthly Joongang, the chief editor of CINE21, and Busan international Film Festival programmer, he has also been working as the Busan Cinema Center program director. KIM Haery / Film Critic KIM Haery has written many critiques that gain audience sympathy by working as an established journalist at the CINE21. She is now a part of the editing committee of the CINE21.     The 21st Busan International Film Festival announcesthe New Currents Section Jurors The 21st BIFF has announced 5 Jurors for the New Currents section in the Asian film competition section. The New Currents section Jury consists of 5 established cineastes of world cinema who will actively look for films with a wide range of genres and materials created by new talented directors.Souleymane Cissé, the most prominent African film director of the 21st century cinema is the spearhead; in addition, four more world-renowned cineastes will visit Busan as the 21st BIFF New Currents Jurors.Souleymane CISSÉ, the most prominent African film director of the 21st century cinema, visits Busan as the head juror of the New Currents sectionSouleymane Cissé is BIFF’s first African head juror, as well as the most influential present day African film director. Cissé is a historic figure of resistance against autocracy and oppression in Africa as well as an acknowledged filmmaker and cineaste of world cinema. Cissé entered the cinema world by working as a staff member for the documentary on Congo’s independence fighter, Patrice Lumumba. He also participated in producing controversial works, alarming Malian society, despite the government oppression. His film, Yeelen (1987) was invited to the Cannes Film Festival as the first Black African film and also as the first Black African film to win the Jury Prize. His film, Waati (1987), which portrays the evil of apartheid, and Oka(2015) were both invited to the Cannes Film Festival, and have become representative of African cinema. Further contributions to the growth of African cinema have included the establishment of the Union des Créateurs et Entrepreneurs du Cinéma et de l'Audiovisuel de l'Afrique de l'Ouest (UCECAO) - known in English as the Union of Creators and Entrepreneurs of Cinema and Audiovisual of West Africa. He was invited as one of the 8 representatives of universal culture and art at The Protection of Cultural Contents and Artistic Expressions 2005 at UNESCO. In 1996 and 2006, he participated as a juror at the Cannes Film Festival and at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1996. He continued directing beginning with Den Muso (The Girl), and continued making films criticizing corruption in Mali, dealing with labor issues and student movements such as Baara (The Porter) (1978) and Finye (The Wind) (1982). His fourth feature, Yeelen (The Brightness) (1987) was the first Black African film to be entered into competition at the Cannes Film Festival and received the Jury Prize. All his films thereafter, from Waati (1995) to O Ka (2015) have been introduced at the Cannes Film Festival. He was appointed as a jury member at the Cannes Film Festival in 1983, 2006, and at Venice Film Festival in 1996. Currently, he is the founder of the Union of Creators and Entrepreneurs of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts of Western Africa (UCECAO), playing a central role in the African and global film scene. He is also the first Black African jury member to be appointed to the Busan International Film Festival.■ Guneet MONGA / Producer / IndiaGuneet Monga is one of the 12 successful women in the global entertainment industry, and an Indian film producer who has worked with producers such as The Match Factory, Elle Driver, and Fortissimo Films. Many of her films were invited to various film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival. She has worked for many years with Anurag Kashyap to produce 23 films that include Gangs ofWasseypur (2012). Other films include The Lunchbox (2013) which was nominated for the Film Not in the English Language category of the British Academy Film Awards in 2013, Masaan (2015) which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, and Zubaan (2015) which was selected as the opening film for the 20th Busan International Film Festival.■ Bero BEYER / International Film Festival Rotterdam Festival Director / NetherlandsBero Beyer is known for producing Paradise Now (2005), which won the AGICOA Blue Angel Award at the Berlin International Film Festival 2005, and Salt of this Sea (2008), which was nominated for Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival 2008. From 2010 to 2012, he served in the film section committee at the Raad voor Cultuur (Council for Culture), and beginning in 2013, he has consulted for the Netherlands Film Fund. In 2014 he produced Atlantic (2014), which was selected for the official Toronto International Film Festival 2014’s offical World Premier. Presently, he is the festival director of the International Film Festival Rotterdam.■ ZHANG Lu / Director / KoreaZhang Lu became a director beginning with Eleven (2000) which was invited to the Venice International Film Festival. Director Zhang Lu debuted with his first feature Tang Poetry (2003). His Grain in Ear (2005) won the New Currents Awards at the Busan International Film Festival 2005, the Prix ACID du meilleur in the International Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival 2005, and the Concorso PNC at the Pesaro Film Festival 2005. Other films of his have also been invited to major international film festivals, including Desert Dream (2007) which was entered into the competition section at the Berlin International Film Festival 2007, and Chongqing (2008) and Iri (2008) with China and Korea as the backdrop. Presently, he teaches film at the School of Communication at Yonsei University.■ Mahmoud KALARI / Director, Cinematographer, Photographer / IranBorn in Tehran 1951, Mahmoud Kalari began his work as a photographer for an Iranian newspaper after graduating from high school. He studied photography and worked as a photojournalist for the Sygma international photo news agency from 1978 to 1983. He had his first experience as a director of Photography with The Frosty Roads (1985). His long career includes collaboration with major Iranian filmmakers like Kiarostami, Makhmalbaf, Mehrjuie, Panahi, Farhadi and many others. Kalari also enjoys international recognition and has received many awards like the Festival of Art of Cinematography, Camerimage.     The 21st Busan International Film Festival Opening Ceremony Hosts Announced   The 21st Busan International Film Festival announces actor Seol Kyeongku and actress Han Hyo-joo as Opening Ceremony hosts. They acted together in the film Cold Eyes (2013), they will stand together again for the BIFF Opening Ceremony.   Seol Kyeongku made his theater debut in 1993 with Run for your Wife. Seol showed his outstanding acting skills in the film Peppermint Candy (1999) and received high praise as a hidden treasure of Korean cinema. He has showed a wide spectrum of acting skills, from melodrama command to blockbuster appeal and his acting skills have transcended the bounds of possibility in each film. He has now firmly established himself as a representative Korean actor. He first came to the attention of BIFF in 1999 with the opening film Peppermint Candy (1999), followed up by the closing film Camellia in 2010 and Cold Eyes in 2013.   Han Hyo-joo has shown remarkable achievement in her filmography and was honored with the Blue Dragon Film Award for Best Leading Actress. She started acting in the 2005 TV drama Nonstop and went into the film industry with the film My Boss, My Teacher (2006). Currently, she is still ongoing and active in genres of film such as Masquerade (2012), Love 911 (2012), The Beauty Inside (2015) and Haeuhhwa (2016).
